Growing up I remember my mum being ever so slightly bah-humbug about Christmas. Don’t get me wrong – she made our Christmases very special – but there was something in her eyes that told me she wasn’t quite as enthusiastic as we were.
Now I get it. Since having kids Christmas has become a bit of a – dare I say it – chore.
Day to day I can just about keep my head above water in this mad juggle of work and motherhood. But when something out of the ordinary comes along, it tips the balance.
Christmas is a pretty significant tipping point. Presents to buy, extra admin at school, cards to write (or make if you dare), house to decorate, Christmas dinner to plan, family gatherings to organise. Work nights out. Some of it fun, yes. But the chaos of it all, bloody exhausting.
For the past couple of years, the build up to Christmas has felt like a marathon. Shattered, I fall at the final hurdle. Usually getting poorly between Christmas and New Year.
So, it got me thinking. All these extra jobs. All the stuff taking up our already cluttered heads. Us parents (dare I say it, MOTHERS – as we’re often the present buyers at Christmas) need a treat.
And as I packed my shoe box of pressies for Operation Christmas Child (have you heard about this?), I thought to myself I’d quite like to pack a box for some of my mum friends. Especially one of my best friends who has four children (including 18-month-old twins) and probably feels like running for the hills right now.
I’m in no way comparing tired mums to the children receiving the Samaritan Purse’s boxes. But I do think mums deserve an extra special treat this time of year.
So I got in touch with an old friend, Charlie Hanks, whose company Artisan Provender makes the most beautiful hampers, and she kindly agreed to give away one of her gorgeous Christmas Brunch Hampers.
It contains these fabulous goodies from some of the finest farmers and producers across Britain:
